New scenic walk opened in Spean Bridge

A scenic new walk has just been opened at Spean Bridge -- taking visitors past the historic High Bridge area where MacDonnell of Tirindrish made history in 1745. Near the bridge, with a small band of supporters and a piper, he ambushed government troops and effectively launched the first skirmish of the Jacobite rebellion. Our picture shows the opening of the two-mile circular walk, which goes to the famous Commando Memorial.

One of the most popular walks in the area, to the Grey Corries, -- now has a new feature --the figure of a man known as The Wee Minister. It is a copy of a statue that dates back to the 1900s and which vanished from the hillside in the 1970s. He was said to bring luck to travellers who pressed coins into his outstretched hand. Now the local tourism group has resurrected him -- and he has become a favourite photo opportunity for visitors walking the scenic path. The Wee Minister was dedicated in May by a local clergyman, The Rev. Donald MacQuarrie.
